MacMAME is a good all-in-one MAME and frontend solution for Mac users, whether they use OS 9 or OS X. I recently switched my big deluxe style 27" MAME cabinet to use Hyperspin, which hands down blows away everything else I've ever seen. I often use it on old DOS PC's with MAME set up for just a small number of games. 
For a simple DOS frontend that looks good and clean and isn't hard to set up, doesn't have a lot of options, Gamelauncher works.
